Can you believe that Hoodia Gondonii
is a very popular succulent? Why? Because of the medicinal properties
it has within it. In fact, it is known for being the wonder plant. This
is a spiny succulent. In the early stages, it is going to have only one
stem. However, when you get into the later stage, the plant is going to
start branching out. Can you believe that those that are mature can
have up to fifty branches? It's true and they can weigh up to thirty
kg. Under good conditions, it will be able to grow up to one meter. As
we continue this article, you are going to be learning some more
information about this wonderful part of nature.
As you take a look at the flowers, you will find them at the top part
of the plant. You may not want to run up to it and smell those flower.
Why? Because the smell of them is similar to that of rotten meat. Due
to the fact that they smell like rotten meat, they attract flies.
However, that is fine, because those flies pollinate it. Don't let this
scare you off, because this truly is a miracle plant. In many ways, the
flowers look a bit like the petunia flower.
The flowers are a number of different colors. You will find anything
from pale straw to dark maroon. Generally, you will get to see the
flowers in August or September, which can go up to a diameter of 75 mm.
The see will be produced during the month of October and November.
The seed capsule will look a bit like goat horns. This is one of the reasons as to why the Afrikaans call it bokhorings.
It appears to have a wide tolerance to the growing habits. You will
find it in the deep Kalahari sands, on slopes or flats that are dry and
stony or under the protection of certain bushes.
They can live up to twenty five years as long as they have the correct
cultivation. However, in the wild, they may only live up to fifteen
years. Either way you stack it, they are still amazing.
You may not believe it, but many of those weight loss supplements have
this plant in them. The next time you are in the store, you may want to
look at the weight loss section and see if you can find ones that have Hoodia.
However, you need to pay close attention, because there is fake Hoodia,
which is not so good for you. Many natives in Africa eat this plant raw
(after they got the spines out) in order to suppress their appetite.
That's right, did you ever think a simple part of nature would be able
to help you lose that weight?
In the end, it is completely up to you if you want to use Hoodia Gordonii
or not. However, you should take note that it has been approved by the
FDA. You may want to discuss this issue with your doctor as it may not
go well with the other medications you are taking.
